World Cup Revenue Source

Recently, the MTA/Foxborough Teachers' Union has raised the notion that money the Town receives from World Cup Soccer can and should be spent to fund significant salary increases for teachers and educational assistants. The reality is that these funds cannot and should not be used for such a purpose.

  • The School Committee’s current proposals for salary increases are very fair and can be funded by existing tax revenue. The Foxborough Schools continue to be a ‘destination district’ for educators.
  • One-time money should never be used to fund recurring expenses such as salaries. Engaging in such an irresponsible practice would ultimately create a structural tax deficit, and would result in significant property tax increases, a lower bond rating for the Town, among other negative impacts.
  • There will be no windfall from the World Cup. The revenues generated by the World Cup will largely be offset by the loss of revenue due to the necessity of cancelling the normal schedule of Spring concerts at the stadium.
